KUCHING: i-CATS University has been upgraded to a full-fledged university, strengthening Sarawak’s higher education sector and expanding opportunities in technology and aerospace education.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the Sarawak Government had received confirmation that the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Higher Education, had approved the elevation of i-CATS University after it fulfilled the required criteria.

“This is certainly a significant boost for Sarawak because we now have two Sarawak-owned universities, namely the University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) in Sibu and i-CATS University as a full-fledged university,” he said to reporters after officiating the Sarawak Career and Training (SCaT) Fair at Hikmah Exchange Event Centre today (June 6).

He said the development would further support the state’s efforts to build a skilled workforce capable of meeting the demands of emerging industries.

He noted that i-CATS University continues to focus on technology-based education and has recently established a Faculty of Aerospace.

The university is also collaborating with a university in Istanbul, Türkiye, to offer bachelor’s degree programmes in aerospace-related fields.

“At the same time, we are working with other universities, including Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), and aerospace courses are already being offered this year,” he said.

On the development of the proposed iCATS campus in Trombol, Abang Johari said the project is progressing and will be implemented in phases.

He said the development is expected to cost about RM400 million and will include student dormitories.

“We are developing the campus in Trombol and carrying out the project in phases, including the construction of dormitories for students,” he added.
