Continuous torrential rains in South China have led to ongoing disasters. Following a recent pickup truck accident in Guangxi that resulted in 10 deaths, Guizhou Province’s Guiding County has been hit by heavy rains since yesterday, causing flooding and landslides. By 3 PM Tuesday, four people were confirmed dead and five missing. Meanwhile, earlier heavy rains in Hunan and Hubei provinces have also caused disasters, with reports so far indicating four deaths and six missing persons, bringing the total to 16 dead and 13 missing.
For two consecutive days, Guiding County in Guizhou has been struck by sudden heavy rainfall, resulting in floods and landslides in some areas. Parts of the county have seen homes flooded and roads damaged, with external communications also having been cut off.
The Guiding County government has mobilized personnel from the armed police, public security, fire department, health care, electricity, and communications sectors to head to the scene for search and rescue, relocation, medical treatment, road clearing, and communications repair, with rescue operations still ongoing. The Guizhou provincial government has also dispatched a working group to the affected area to coordinate rescue and relief efforts.
According to the Guiding County Flood Control and Drought Relief Command, as of 3 PM Tuesday, preliminary verification showed that the floods caused by the heavy rains had resulted in four deaths and five missing persons in the entire county.
Previously, from the 17th to the 18th, heavy rains hit Xuan'en County in Enshi Prefecture, Hubei Province, with the highest recorded rainfall reaching 292.6 millimeters, causing rivers to swell. Multiple homes along the banks of Baishuihe Village were flooded, some collapsed, and roads were cut off. So far, three people have died and four are missing.
In addition, Shimen County in Hunan Province has seen extreme rain since the 17th, with precipitation breaking historical records. So far, one death and two missing persons have been reported, and authorities have urgently relocated and resettled 18,406 people.
In Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, a pickup truck carrying 15 people was swept into a river by rapidly rising water while crossing a bridge in Huanjiang County on the night of the 16th. After days of search and rescue operations, the pickup was retrieved from the river after 11 a.m. today, and by this evening, 10 deaths have been confirmed.
