(United States, 6th) — Former U.S. President Trump’s erstwhile ally, tech billionaire Elon Musk, announced on the 5th that he has established a new political party in the U.S. to challenge what he calls America’s “one-party dictatorship” system.
According to AFP, Musk wrote on social platform X: “On the issue of waste and corruption destroying the country, we live in a one-party state, not a democracy. Today, the America Party is founded, giving your freedom back to you.”
Musk strongly opposes Trump’s “Big and Beautiful” tax reform bill and criticized Republican supporters for advocating “debt slavery.”
Musk had previously invested nearly $300 million into supporting Trump’s campaign to return to the White House and assisted the much-controversial “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE) during the Trump administration, a department tasked with cutting federal government expenditures. However, the two had a public falling out over Trump’s spending bill, and their relationship rapidly deteriorated.
Earlier this week, Trump threatened to cut off large federal subsidies to Musk’s companies.
Previously, Musk had indicated that he would form a new political party and invest to unseat Republican lawmakers who supported the aforementioned bill in next year's midterm elections.
Trump previously threatened to deport Musk, who was born in South Africa, from the United States and to strip federal funding from his companies.
