On the 18th, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held separate phone conversations with Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn and Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak. Wang Yi told both officials that vigilance is needed against those who "spread false statements to smear" the friendly relations between China and Cambodia and China and Thailand.
According to Xinhua News Agency, both Cambodia and Thailand briefed Wang Yi on the latest developments regarding the two countries’ border conflict and expressed a "desire to de-escalate and ceasefire."
Wang Yi told both foreign ministers that, as a friend and close neighbor to both Cambodia and Thailand, China is the last to wish to see the two nations in conflict, and is deeply saddened by the civilian casualties caused by the clashes. He noted that the intensity of this latest conflict far surpasses those in the past, and that its continuation would benefit neither side and would also damage ASEAN solidarity. The most pressing task is to make decisions, achieve a ceasefire as soon as possible, stop losses in a timely manner, and rebuild mutual trust.
Wang Yi mentioned that, regarding the Cambodia-Thailand border dispute, China adheres to the principle of "promoting peace and talks, acting fairly and impartially," and supports ASEAN’s mediation efforts. The Chinese Foreign Ministry’s Special Envoy for Asian Affairs has already departed for Cambodia and Thailand for shuttle diplomacy, and China will continue to serve as a bridge and facilitator, playing a constructive role in promoting the restoration of peace between Cambodia and Thailand.
He stated that he hopes Cambodia and Thailand will take effective measures to ensure the safety of Chinese projects and personnel, and to be vigilant against those who are "spreading false statements" that smear the friendly relations between China and the two countries.
According to reports, both foreign ministers highly praised China’s "objective and just stance, as well as its mediation efforts," and welcomed the Chinese envoy’s shuttle diplomacy. They also look forward to China playing a greater role in helping to de-escalate the situation and restore peace.
