(Seria, 2nd) Zi Rongyao, a doctoral student from the School of Law and Society at Yunnan Normal University, recently visited Brunei for the second time to conduct a special research project on the Chinese community and Chinese-language education. During the research period, the visit coincided with the 80th birthday celebrations of His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei. Zi Rongyao made a special trip to the "Sultan's Celebration with the People" event held at Seria Municipal Square, experiencing firsthand the Sultan's approachable leadership style and the people's enthusiastic reverence for the royal family.
The "Sultan's Celebration with the People" is a key part of the Sultan's 80th birthday festivities, with Seria being the third stop of the series. That morning, His Majesty the Sultan, accompanied by royal family members, made a personal appearance at the Seria Municipal Square. The royal family members accompanying him included Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office and Crown Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office Prince Pengiran Abdul Malik, Foreign Minister Prince Pengiran Abdul Mateen, as well as Prince Pengiran Haji Jefri Bolkiah. Upon the Sultan’s arrival, hundreds of teachers and students along the way enthusiastically waved small national flags in welcome. At the celebration, 435 students and youths staged a performance themed "Outstanding Monarch, Glorious People."
At the event, Zi Rongyao had the precious opportunity to shake hands up close with His Majesty the Sultan, personally experiencing the Sultan’s love and close rapport with the people, as well as the warm support of the public. In addition, he also took group photos with Prince Malik and Prince Mateen. Zi Rongyao said the royal family's down-to-earth style and the people’s sincere admiration left a profound impression on him, making it an unforgettable cultural experience.
It is understood that this is Zi Rongyao’s second humanities research trip to Brunei, following his previous visit in 2025. During this trip, he visited Brunei’s Chinese-medium schools, had in-depth exchanges with education workers and representatives of the Chinese community, and learned about the development of Chinese-language education and cultural transmission within the Chinese community in Brunei. Zi Rongyao noted that Chinese-language education in Brunei not only preserves the essence of Chinese culture but also incorporates local cultural characteristics, forming a unique teaching model. The findings of this research will further enrich academic understanding of Brunei’s Chinese community and Chinese education.
