Chinese drama goddess Tiffany Tang (Tang Yan) once again rose to fame last year after starring with Hu Ge in Wong Kar-wai’s ‘Blossoms Shanghai’. She later filmed a new drama, ‘Love Has No Myth’, with Mark Chao. Unexpectedly, the scriptwriter of ‘Love Has No Myth’, Qin Wen, recently revealed in leaked audio involving Wong Kar-wai that she had assaulted a police officer and also severely criticized several popular celebrities, sparking a huge uproar. As a result, the originally scheduled November premiere of ‘Love Has No Myth’ was suddenly canceled. Although the ‘Blossoms Shanghai’ production team recently released a statement accusing the scriptwriter Gu Er (real name Cheng Junnian), who leaked the recording, of malicious smearing, the controversy shows no sign of stopping. With ‘Love Has No Myth’ unable to air, reports have emerged that production company New Classics Media is facing a shortage of funds, which has further delayed the start of new dramas produced by New Classics and starring Tiffany Tang (‘Life in This Moment’) and Zhang Ruoyun (‘A Thousand Miles of Rivers and Mountains’).
It is reported that Qin Wen is a major shareholder in New Classics, as well as a core scriptwriter signed since 2012. New Classics has provided her with an exclusive team of script consultants, working together to create major hits such as ‘The First Half of My Life’, ‘My Best Friend's Story’, ‘My Heroic Husband’, and ‘Blossoms Shanghai’. She has also received multiple awards, including the Magnolia and Golden Eagle awards. Now with Qin Wen’s reputation in shambles, rumors say that the recent heated speculation over the casting of the leads in ‘The Phoenix Ascendant’ is a deliberate move by New Classics to divert public attention.
It is now reported that, since CCTV is unable to broadcast the dramas, New Classics is currently planning to sell both ‘Love Has No Myth’ and ‘Life in This Moment’ to Shanghai TV. Last year, Tiffany Tang finally managed to reclaim the spotlight thanks to Wong Kar-wai’s ‘Blossoms Shanghai’, but now, through no fault of her own, both of her new dramas have been implicated by Qin Wen’s controversy, all stemming from Wong Kar-wai’s leaked audio. Netizens can’t help but sigh, saying Tiffany Tang is truly ‘made by Wong Kar-wai, and ruined by Wong Kar-wai’.
