(Thailand, 10th) The notorious Bangkok Rama II Road construction project has seen yet another accident: a construction worker was tragically killed after being struck by a toppled pile driver while on the job.
The Rama II Road project, a key transportation artery connecting Bangkok to southern Thailand, has, since its commencement in 2019, been plagued by more than 2,500 construction-related incidents. According to data, these have resulted in 143 deaths and injuries to more than 1,400 people to date.
The Bangkok Post and public broadcaster Thai PBS reported that the latest fatal incident occurred today (9th) around 2 PM in the Samut Sakhon province section of the route.
According to reports, preliminary investigations indicate that the accident happened while the pile driver was lifting a concrete pile. The suspended pile suddenly swayed, generating a strong lateral force, causing the pile driver to lose balance and topple over.
The pile driver operator's assistant was trapped under the machine and died at the scene.
Police and rescue personnel responded to the report, examined the body, conducted an investigation, and promptly removed the pile driver to restore traffic in the area.
