Communications Minister Fahmi noted that the amendment to the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588) focuses on cybercrime issues such as pedophilia, fraud, and gambling.
He said the bill, passed by Parliament last December, came into effect on February 11, imposing harsher penalties for several offenses.
“In the past, certain acts were defined as evil, and now they are classified as extremely evil with clearer definitions, no longer as broad as before.”
“The amendment also includes additional explanations to provide a clear basis for both prosecution and defense, making the law clearer and more specific, and preventing past misuse.”
He mentioned this on Sunday (February 16) during a meeting with youth in Bangi, speaking to reporters.
Fahmi reminded the public to be cautious when obtaining information from social media and avoid spreading unverified news.
He emphasized that social media users should rely on mainstream media as their primary source of information to ensure accuracy.
“If the mainstream media hasn’t reported on it or doesn’t use the vocabulary or phrases circulating online, I hope everyone refrains from spreading, liking, forwarding, or sharing, as these actions may constitute an offense.”
The amendment was published in the Gazette on February 7 and came into effect on February 11, with the aim to provide a safer and more sustainable environment for users
