A serious fire broke out at Hong Fook Court in Tai Po, New Territories, Hong Kong, destroying many residents’ homes. Affected residents are temporarily staying at government-established emergency shelters. On the 27th, local tycoons including Li Ka-shing announced their donations to help the residents through this difficult time.
According to local media reports, Li Ka-shing, senior advisor of CK Hutchison Holdings and founder of the Li Ka Shing Foundation, expressed deep sadness for the losses and challenges faced by the affected, and said the Foundation is allocating HK$30 million (MYR 15.9468 million) to set up an emergency relief fund. The fund will support registered charities, especially those serving the Tai Po region, and provide aid and recovery assistance for affected families and individuals.
Hong Kong’s major jewelry chain Chow Tai Fook Group also announced a donation of HK$20 million (MYR 10.6312 million) to provide emergency assistance and help the affected residents get through this crisis.
After the fire on the 26th, the group mobilized its subsidiaries to provide temporary accommodation, food, warm clothing, and daily necessities to the affected residents.
There are 8 buildings in Hong Fook Court, with nearly 2,000 housing units. In this fire, 7 buildings caught fire and numerous homes were destroyed. The government has set up temporary shelters at community centers near the estate, and so far, about 700 people are staying there.
