U.S. President Trump announced on the 3rd that “Operation Freedom” will be launched on the 4th to help escort ships belonging to neutral countries trapped in the Strait of Hormuz to safety. He warned that any interference with the action would trigger a “forceful response,” effectively challenging Iran’s blockade.
According to various foreign news outlets, this move comes amid a fragile ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran and soaring oil prices. It may escalate regional tensions and is widely seen as a strategic action with humanitarian and negotiating pressure overtones.
In a post on social media, Trump did not disclose details of the operation, including whether the U.S. Navy would be involved. He described it as a “humanitarian gesture” aimed at helping neutral countries not involved in the U.S. and Israel’s war with Iran.
“For the sake of Iran, the Middle East, and the United States, we have already informed these countries that we will lead their ships safely out of these constrained waters, so that they may continue their business freely and smoothly.”
It is not yet clear how the operation will be carried out, or whether it will be coordinated with Tehran. If it encounters Iranian obstruction, this move could jeopardize the fragile ceasefire agreement that has been in effect since April.
Supplies on Board Running Low
Trump wrote: “The food and various supplies necessary to maintain the health and hygiene of large crews on many ships are nearly depleted. I believe this will demonstrate some goodwill, especially for all parties involved in the intense conflicts of the past several months. But if this humanitarian action is obstructed in any way, such interference will unfortunately have to be met with strong measures.”
The White House and the Pentagon have yet to respond to requests for comment.
