PUTRAJAYA, May 15 (Bernama) -- Malaysia is set to strengthen its role in shaping the future of sustainable urban development at the 13th Session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13), to be held in Baku, Azerbaijan from May 17 to 22.
Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT) said Malaysia will be represented by Minister Nga Kor Ming, who also serves as president of the United Nations Habitat Assembly (UNHA).
"During the forum, Nga is scheduled to participate in the Ministerial Meeting on the New Urban Agenda (NUA), where Malaysia will deliver its national statement and chair the National Statement Roundtable under its leadership role as UN-Habitat president.
"He is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with the executive director of UN-Habitat, member states, and stakeholders of the Habitat Agenda to strengthen multilateral cooperation in sustainable housing and urban development," it said in a statement today.
In addition to multilateral engagements, the ministry said Nga is also set to meet Minister of Municipalities and Housing of Saudi Arabia, Majed Abdullah, reflecting Malaysia’s continued commitment to strengthening international partnerships and advancing shared priorities in sustainable urban development and resilient cities.
The statement said Nga will also officially launch the Malaysia Pavilion during the WUF13 Urban Expo, showcasing the nation’s urban transformation initiatives, affordable housing agenda, and sustainable city aspirations.
"The launch will coincide with the introduction of the Asia Pacific Urban Agenda Platform (AP-UAP), further reinforcing Malaysia’s commitment towards stronger regional collaboration on sustainable urbanisation," it said.
KPKT views WUF13 as an important platform for Malaysia to exchange best practices, strengthen international partnerships, and explore innovative urban solutions that can improve the quality of life for its people.
Meanwhile, Nga said Malaysia believes inclusive national development will be driven by building future-ready cities and communities.
"Through WUF13, we look forward to working closely with global partners to build cities that are inclusive, resilient, and sustainable for future generations," the minister said.
Convened by UN-Habitat, WUF13 gathers global leaders, ministers, policymakers, and urban experts to discuss sustainable cities, housing resilience, and inclusive urban development amid rising global challenges.
