(Miri, 25th) Miri City Council clarifies that it only operates one official Facebook page, and any other accounts using the name of the City Council are unauthorized impersonation accounts and should be considered false accounts.

Mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang stated at a press conference today that the City Council received public complaints about a page with the same name spreading incorrect information, but the City Council is unaware of the existence of this page.

“What’s worse is that they use the City Council’s logo to post certain information, causing public misunderstanding of the City Council. Therefore, I want to remind the public that the City Council only has one official Facebook account: Miri City Council– Pagehttps://www.facebook.com/miricitycouncil), and the City Council is not responsible for information posted on unofficial pages.”

He revealed that the City Council has written to the administrator of the impersonation page and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), but neither has taken any action against the impersonation account.

“It can be said that the City Council has taken relevant measures but has not achieved results. Therefore, I hope to directly explain to the public that this impersonation page is spreading false information and affecting the City Council's reputation.”

When asked whether the City Council would contact Facebook's parent company Meta, Adam Yii Siew Sang stated that he would check whether the City Council has taken relevant action and consider contacting Meta if necessary.

He further explained that the City Council is a local government agency, and spreading misleading information under its name and causing the public to have a wrong impression of the City Council is a serious issue that cannot be ignored.
