(Kuching, 25th) Premier Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari stated that Sarawak will become a key participant in meeting the growing global demand for natural gas, with Sarawak Oil Company (Petros) being the sole aggregator of natural gas.
Abang Johari mentioned that Sarawak Oil Company will strategically manage the distribution of Sarawak's natural gas resources to maximize resource potential, strengthen energy security, and catalyze industrial growth not only in Sarawak but also in the wider region.
He made these remarks while attending the Sarawak Gas Roadmap (SGR) Summit today.
According to him, the Sarawak government launched the Sarawak Gas Roadmap in 2021, recognizing the transformative potential of natural gas as a bridging fuel to facilitate industrial expansion while promoting Sarawak's energy transition journey.
He said the forward-looking roadmap aims to expand gas-based infrastructure and networks, positioning Sarawak as a strategic hub for gas-based industries while enhancing energy access for businesses and communities.
He also pointed out that global gas demand is expected to grow after 2030, especially in Asia, with Malaysia's energy structure anticipated to see gas grow by 43% to 56% from 2023 to 2050 to support this demand.
He added that natural gas signifies the importance of driving economic resilience and energy transition efforts.
Meanwhile, he also mentioned that the foundation stone for the 500MW Miri combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plant will be laid on November 30th (Saturday).
He said part of the Sarawak Gas Roadmap marks a significant milestone for the state in enhancing energy security and generation capacity in the northern region.
