(Kuching, 24th) Sarawak Deputy Minister for Tourism and Creative Industry, Datuk Snowdan Lawan, stated that although stand-up comedy is still a relatively novel form of entertainment in Sarawak, it can bring new development opportunities for those aspiring to pursue the performing arts.
Snowdan pointed out that stand-up comedy not only allows individuals to expand their careers in the creative field, but can also serve as a gateway into the performing arts and film production industries.
He said that for Sarawak, this form of entertainment can likewise be developed into a new tourism activity.
“By staging stand-up comedy shows involving regional and even international comedians, we can further enhance the appeal of Kuching. This form of entertainment will definitely help boost tourism and attract visitors who are seeking entertainment experiences other than music.”
Snowdan made these remarks to reporters on Sunday (23rd) while attending the “Harith Iskandar – Jailed for Jokes – Agi Idup Agi Ngelaban – Live in Kuching” performance by actor and comedian Harith Iskandar.
Snowdan hopes that in the future, comedians can organize workshops and courses for interested young people, nurturing local stand-up comedy talent and assisting them in entering the performing arts or film production industries.
He further revealed that local entertainment organizers also plan to hold a mini comedy festival around 2026, inviting renowned comedians from the UK, the United States, and other regions, injecting vigor into Sarawak’s growing comedy culture and tourism industry.
“This plan aims to complement existing events such as the Rainforest World Music Festival, attracting regional tourists by creating a similar comedy festival and enriching the range of entertainment options in Sarawak,” he said.
