The South Korean National Assembly voted on June 30 to approve Han Sung-sook as South Korea's Prime Minister, and President Lee Jae-myung officially appointed Han Sung-sook as the new prime minister on July 1.
The South Korean presidential office, the Blue House, said that Lee Jae-myung held an inauguration ceremony for Han Sung-sook at the Blue House, officially presenting her with the letter of appointment.
On June 30, South Korea's National Assembly held a plenary session to vote on the nomination of Han Sung-sook as Prime Minister; the nomination was approved with 166 votes in favor and 1 invalid vote. Lawmakers from the largest opposition party, the People Power Party, refused to participate in the vote.
She is the second female Prime Minister in South Korea, after Han Myeong-sook.
Born in Gyeonggi Province in 1967, Han Sung-sook graduated from the Department of English at Sookmyung Women’s University. She previously served as CEO of South Korean internet enterprise 'Navigator.' In 2025, she was appointed Minister of SMEs and Startups. With her extensive experience in the digital industry and business management, she is expected to further promote South Korea’s AI transformation and drive economic innovation and common prosperity for all citizens.
According to analysis from South Korean media outlet Hankyoreh, the South Korean government will take Han Sung-sook’s appointment as Prime Minister as an opportunity to accelerate AI industrial development and digital transformation, regarding AI as an important engine for economic growth and strengthening national competitiveness.
