(Miri, 28th) Sarawak Minister of Transport Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin stated that Miri Airport will replace its 3rd overhead bridge this March, followed by the replacement of the 4th overhead bridge, with each bridge expected to cost RM2 million.

Lee mentioned during a press conference after a briefing by Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad that Miri Airport's overhead bridges have been in use for many years, leading to frequent malfunctions, so it is time for replacements.

He said that regarding airport expansion, the Malaysian Ministry of Transport, the Public Works Department, and Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad previously held meetings, appointed a consultancy firm for design, and will conduct on-site assessments of the airport.

He pointed out that the expansion project of Miri Airport's terminal building has initiated preliminary meetings to begin the project's initial planning work, with implementation expected in early 2026, and completion estimated within 36 months.

“The new airport area will increase from 16,900 square meters to 25,000 square meters, with 6 new overhead bridges and an expanded departure hall. As part of the airport expansion plan, Miri Airport will add 6 new overhead bridges, bringing the total to 9. Currently, the airport is equipped with only 3 boarding bridges.”

He also said the expansion will not only increase the number of boarding bridges but also improve airport traffic smoothness, providing ample parking facilities including areas for buses, e-hailing, and taxis. Additionally, the airport plans to add an international flight waiting lounge to further enhance service quality.

“Miri is the main gateway to Northern Sarawak and a tourist city that will welcome more domestic and international flights in the future. Miri Airport is one of Malaysia's busiest domestic airports, with annual flight movements reaching 42,076 prior to the pandemic in 2019, and a passenger throughput of over 2.43 million, exceeding the current airport capacity.”

Reportedly, five airlines operate in Miri Airport, namely MASwings, Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia, Scoot, and Batik Air.
