(Miri, 3rd) Miri Member of Parliament Chiew Chieng Jen stated that schools should be places where children can learn and grow safely, but in recent years, frequent student safety incidents nationwide have drawn great attention from society and parents.
He said he feels a deep responsibility to immediately take measures to protect the safety of children.

Chiew Chieng Jen pointed out that he will take the lead in promoting two school safety initiatives in the Miri area to ensure students can learn in a safer environment: First, installing closed-circuit televisions (CCTV) in schools to cover dark and secluded corners of the campus, enabling school authorities to more effectively monitor the environment and prevent crimes, bullying, or other undesirable incidents.
Secondly, providing metal detectors to schools to prevent students from bringing contraband such as weapons, mobile phones, and e-cigarettes onto campus, thereby reducing potential risks and negative impacts at the source.
“This may be just a small step, but I believe prevention is better than remedying problems after the fact. We must act before tragedy happens. Children’s safety is our utmost priority, and we cannot delay for even one second.”
He emphasized that this initiative is his commitment to the Miri constituency, to allow children in Miri to learn and grow in a safe, secure, and threat-free campus environment.
