(Sibu, 19th) Sarawak DAP Political Education Director, Lawyer Irene Chang, pointed out that she has received complaints from some hardworking vendors at the Zhonghua Road Market, who have to endure the hot and humid environment almost every day, especially when the weather is warm. Although there are fans installed, the positioning of the fans does not effectively provide the expected relief to all vendors in the market.
Irene Chang urges the Sibu Municipal Council to reassess the current fan locations and consider adding more fans in strategic locations to help alleviate discomfort and provide a more comfortable trading environment for all vendors.
"Even though there are fans, the installation positions seem to be less than ideal, not taking into account the areas most affected by heat and humidity. Therefore, many vendors still feel uncomfortable after working long hours, which in turn affects their overall health and work efficiency."
She points out that the vendors' appeal is not unfounded because during peak times and dry season, the market could become unbearably hot. The circulation of cooler air also helps reduce the risk of food contamination caused by high temperatures and humidity. Vendors operating in a more comfortable environment will directly translate to a more pleasant shopping experience for customers, encouraging more people to visit the market to purchase fresh produce.
She stated that even though the location of Zhonghua Road Market is temporary, the Sibu Municipal Council should improve the facilities of the existing market as long as the vendors are using the current location during this period. These vendors make great contributions to the local economy and food culture, and their livelihoods deserve the government's support.
