KUCHING: Police seized more than RM41,000 worth of methamphetamine and arrested four individuals in two separate operations carried out by the state Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) here this week.

Kuching police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the first raid was conducted at 10.45 pm on Nov 18 along Jalan Borneo, where a police team detained a 38-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman.

“Checks on both suspects led to the discovery of two packets of methamphetamine weighing 7.02g, valued at RM772,” he said in a statement.

He added both suspects tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine, and each had one prior criminal record.

“They are being investigated under Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries two to five years’ jail and three to nine strokes of the cane.
“Both have been remanded for two days, from Nov 20 to 21,” he stated.

In the second operation at 4.15 pm on Nov 19, police arrested two local men aged 33 and 41 at Jalan Tun Jugah.

The team recovered a package containing 1,059.10g of methamphetamine, worth RM40,245.80.

Alexson then said one suspect tested negative for drugs while the other tested positive.

“Checks also showed the older suspect had four previous criminal records, while the younger had none.

“The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the same Act, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment with a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane. Both suspects were remanded for seven days, from Nov 21 to 27,” he said.

Alexson added that the success of both operations was due to continuous intelligence efforts and public cooperation, stressing that police will not compromise with any individuals involved in drug distribution.

He reminded the public that drugs remain the nation’s number one enemy and encouraged the community to channel information through the Bukit Aman NCID hotline at 012-208 7222 or the Sarawak NCID hotline at 017-592 9211.
