Li Mingzhong Fulfills Dream of Working with Sean Lau, Admits 'The On-set Atmosphere Was a Bit Dry'

Malaysian actor Li Mingzhong worked with Hong Kong film king Sean Lau (Lau Ching-wan) in the Hong Kong-made drama series The Night Manager, and could hardly contain his excitement. He revealed that Sean’s aura is very strong but also admitted that, since they were not familiar and because he himself is more introverted, the atmosphere was a bit dry. Li Mingzhong said, “Sean Lau is among the top three actors I most wanted to work with in my acting career, so I really treasured this opportunity and tried to learn from him all the time. I hope there will be a chance to work with him again in the future.”

This is Li Mingzhong’s first time participating in a Hong Kong-produced series since entering the industry. He feels lucky to now work alongside actors he could “only see on TV” as a teenager, describing getting the invitation as a moment of great excitement and anticipation. During the shoot, he transitioned from being nervous to feeling relaxed, learned a lot throughout, and truly enjoyed the work—he says he still can’t believe it all really happened.

In his eyes, Sean Lau is a very restrained actor whose on-set aura is intense, often throwing out ideas that no one expected during filming. “Actually, he also loves to laugh and would often unexpectedly throw out a funny line, which really put everyone at ease. I really love that kind of vibe.” However, Li Mingzhong admits that he and Sean Lau are not that close yet—sometimes, during scenes with just the two of them, the atmosphere could feel a bit dry and the set would become very quiet. #
