(Kuala Lumpur, 16th) According to data released by the Royal Malaysia Police, from January 2023 to the end of 2024, a total of 476 murder cases were recorded nationwide, a staggering number.
The Daily Metropolitan cited data from the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID), showing that there were 261 murder cases in 2023, averaging 5 per week and about 21 per month.
Between January and November 2024, another 215 murder cases were reported, averaging 4 per week and about 17 per month.
Among all states, Selangor recorded the most murder cases over these two years, with a total of 115 cases; followed by Perak (60 cases), Johor (59 cases), Sabah (47 cases), and Sarawak (36 cases).
The Criminal Investigation Department pointed out that the high number of murder cases in Selangor is related to its large geographical area, high population density, and rapid economic development, factors that attract a large influx of foreign workers, indirectly affecting public security.
The data shows that in 2023, a total of 266 people died from murder, including 212 men and 54 women.
From January to November 2024, there were 226 victims, with as many as 87 being foreign nationals. CID analysis indicated that foreign nationals are more likely to become murder victims compared to locals.
In terms of law enforcement, in 2023, 185 investigation reports (71% of total cases) were charged in court under Section 302 of the Penal Code (murder). During the period from January to November 2024, 149 investigation reports (69.3%) were charged under the same section.
