(Miri, 16th) The international commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the 1945 Operation Semut parachute landing in Bario will take place on the morning of the 25th of this month at 10 AM at the Bario Memorial Park.

Deputy Minister of the Sarawak Premier's Department, Dato Gerawat Gala, stated at a press conference this morning that this event is to commemorate the WWII Operation Semut I parachute landing in Bario. The mission of Semut I was to execute key tasks of the Z Special Unit by establishing initial contacts with the indigenous people of Borneo, training them, and deploying them as forces to fight against the Japanese troops.

He mentioned that this year's event includes a reenactment of the Semut I Operation at the landing zone of the Bario Memorial Park. The reenactment will be conducted by the Malaysia Sport Parachute Association (MASPA), Payung Terjun Sarawak, Fire and Rescue Department and supported by the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) and Australian Defense Force in a joint parachute demonstration.

"Sarawak Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Dato Sri Abdul Karim, has agreed to attend the 80th anniversary commemoration of the 1945 Bario Semut parachute operation."

This annual event, held since 2013, attracts former soldiers and families of Semut agents as well as local heroes who assisted the Z Special Unit, to pay tribute to heroism and bravery in the fight for freedom, marking Sarawak's liberation from Japanese occupation during WWII.

Over the years, this commemorative event has evolved into an international occasion with veterans and their families from countries such as the UK, New Zealand, and Australia participating. The military, local veterans, tourists, and local communities are also involved.

Furthermore, on the 27th of this month, similar commemoration activities for the Semut parachute operation will be held at Independence Square in Kuching, attended by the Sarawak Premier, Dato Patinggi Abang Johari, encouraging the public to attend and witness the event.
