(Miri, 16th) Deputy Minister of Sarawak Tourism, Datuk Sebastian Ting, stated that since its establishment in 1965, the Sarawak Teacher's Union has played an important role in safeguarding the welfare of Sarawak teachers. For sixty years, the union has not only been advocating for the rights and needs of teachers but has also played a crucial role in ensuring the continuous improvement of the educational level in Sarawak.

He said, for the new teachers in Sarawak, I encourage you all to join the Sarawak Teacher's Union as members. The union is not just a union, but a platform dedicated to fighting for the rights and welfare of teachers across the state.

Sebastian Ting expressed this during his speech at the 60th anniversary party of the Sarawak Teacher's Union.

He pointed out that the Sarawak Teacher's Union has successfully become the largest teacher's union in Sarawak, with about 30,000 members. This is a remarkable achievement, reflecting the trust and confidence education workers have in the STU leadership in safeguarding their rights and welfare.

"After becoming an STU member, teachers will receive multiple benefits, including protection and defense in cases related to service and welfare affairs; access to professional development opportunities, such as training, seminars, and workshops organized by STU; working together to uphold teachers' rights and needs, including salary increases, allowances, and improving working conditions, while strengthening the support network among teachers across Sarawak to promote the sharing of knowledge and experience. A strong union ensures that teachers' voices are heard and respected."

He said, as the Deputy Minister of Tourism in Sarawak, I want to take this opportunity to emphasize that our ministry highly values the role education workers play in shaping a knowledgeable and competitive generation. We hope that Sarawak University can continue to play a role in raising awareness among teachers and students of the potential in Sarawak's tourism, creative industries, and performing arts fields. Education and these sectors can be combined to further advance our nation's development.

"The Department of Tourism, Creative Industries, and Performing Arts also supports Sarawak's education through tourism, culture, and arts promotion programs. These initiatives include launching learning modules on cultural heritage and creative industries in collaboration with educational institutions, organizing art and culture competitions for students, and providing training opportunities and showcase opportunities for the tourism and performing arts industries. We hope these initiatives can help cultivate more competitive students and understand the importance of tourism and arts in Sarawak's development."

Sebastian Ting also congratulated the union on successfully hosting the 60th anniversary event and wished the union continued growth, progress, and success in defending the rights and welfare of teachers in the state.
