The Wall Street Journal: UAE Secretly Airstrikes Iran, From Target to Belligerent

Published at May 12, 2026 05:42 pm
The Wall Street Journal, citing sources familiar with the matter, reported that the United Arab Emirates has launched military attacks against Iran. This move demonstrates that the UAE, originally one of Iran's primary targets, has now become an actively engaged party in the war.

The report stated that the UAE military, equipped with Western-made fighter jets and surveillance networks, now shows more willingness to use force to protect its own economic interests and its growing influence in the Middle East.

According to informed sources, the military strikes—which have yet to be officially acknowledged by the UAE—include an attack in early April on an Iranian refinery located on Lavan Island in the Persian Gulf, causing the facility to cease operation for several months. At the time, Iran stated that the refinery was attacked by hostile forces and responded by launching missile and drone strikes against the UAE and Kuwait in retaliation.

The Wall Street Journal quoted one of the sources as saying that the United States was not displeased with the attack, since a ceasefire agreement has yet to come into effect, and that Washington privately has a positive view toward the UAE and other Gulf nations willing to join the action.

The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not comment on the reported strikes, but referenced past statements that the UAE reserves the right to respond—including militarily—against hostile acts.

It is understood that Iran’s attacks have severely impacted the UAE’s aviation, tourism, and real estate markets, resulting in a wave of unpaid leave and layoffs. Gulf officials said Iran’s assaults have fundamentally shifted the UAE’s strategic focus, with Abu Dhabi now viewing Iran as a malicious actor seeking to undermine the country’s economic and social model based on attracting foreign talent and maintaining a secure, stable image.
