On the 11th, the Israeli parliament passed a bill to establish a special military tribunal to try Palestinians suspected of participating in the Hamas assault on Israel on October 7, 2023.
According to the bill, the special military tribunal has the authority to impose death sentences.
The Times of Israel reported that the special military tribunal will try roughly 300 “attackers” who were captured and have been detained in Israel since the “10·7” attack. The bill also stipulates that anyone suspected, accused, or convicted of participating in the “10·7” assault may not be released through prisoner exchange agreements.
The Israeli parliament passed the bill with 93 votes in favor, 0 against, and 0 abstentions.
On October 7, 2023, Hamas launched attacks from Gaza on Israeli military and civilian targets, resulting in around 1,200 deaths and taking 251 people hostage to Gaza. On that same day, the Israeli military launched military operations in Gaza, which have since caused more than 72,000 deaths and injured over 172,000 people. Since the first phase of the Gaza ceasefire agreement came into effect on October 10 last year, the Israeli military has repeatedly launched attacks citing violations of the ceasefire by the Palestinian side, resulting in casualties.
