Hollywood heartthrob Brad Pitt has recently made headlines as his children have one after another filed petitions with the court to remove the paternal surname “Pitt.” Facing the double blow of strained family relationships and the loss of close loved ones, the 62-year-old Pitt recently gave a rare and candid interview to the British magazine Esquire, in which he honestly discussed the immense pain these experiences brought him, even revealing that he had suicidal thoughts during an extremely low period.
In the interview, Pitt emphasized that he’s not someone who easily considers suicide, describing himself as “innately overly optimistic.” He admitted that in the past, this excessive optimism had helped him many times, yet also sometimes led him naively into life’s biggest obstacles. However, he acknowledged that during an especially low period caused by family upheaval, he did have an exception: “During that time, I just... couldn't see a way out. The pain was suffocating. I wouldn't actually do it, but I could feel that if everything ended right there, it might actually feel like a relief.” Soon after, with the human instinct for survival, his will to live quickly kicked back in. He also reflected, “Life really isn’t easy.”
When pressed further by the reporter, Pitt confirmed that the suffering he referred to mainly stemmed from “family matters.” Besides growing distant from his children, his mother Jane Pitt also passed away a year ago at the age of 84, with both blows pushing his grief to its peak. Speaking about his mother’s passing, Pitt movingly said: “If you get through sadness, it leaves a huge hole, but at the same time it leaves a profound beauty. It’s a heartbreaking beauty, but it’s still beauty.”
