(Kuching, Jan 2) Kuching's Rumah Seri Kenangan elderly home has made history by welcoming its first legally married elderly couple.
This marriage has become a symbol, supporting the notion that elderly people have the right to live happy and meaningful lives at any age.
Sarawak Minister of Women, Children, and Community Welfare Development, Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah,, mentioned in an interview today at the Sarawak National Registration Department that the couple both lost their original partners and decided to marry after building a close and mutual understanding relationship.
She stated that the marriage was facilitated by the National Registration Department and the church.
"At Rumah Seri Kenangan elderly home, we believe that age is not a barrier to finding happiness. Elderly individuals also need companionship to avoid loneliness and depression. This marriage proves the importance of emotional and spiritual supportive relationships."
She also mentioned that the couple met the relevant conditions of the elderly home, including not having mental illnesses or infectious diseases and not having relatives in need of care.
Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah pointed out that the wedding was simple yet joyful, with active participation from the elderly home and church members.
She emphasized that having similar religious backgrounds and interests is crucial for maintaining long-lasting relationships.
"The couple are equally engaged in learning religious knowledge, which is an important foundation of their relationship. They also complement each other in daily activities, such as singing and sharing stories together."
This is the first wedding at Rumah Seri Kenangan elderly home this year, and the home hopes this will inspire other elderly individuals to continue pursuing happiness.
