Academician of the US National Academy of Sciences and internationally renowned statistician Liu Jun has been appointed as a full-time professor at Tsinghua University, where he will promote the rapid development of disciplines such as statistics and data science in the context of artificial intelligence.
According to Tsinghua News Network, Tsinghua University held an appointment ceremony for Liu Jun as a “Tsinghua University Xinghua Distinguished Chair Professor” on Saturday (August 30).
Tsinghua University President Li Luming said he looks forward to Liu Jun fully joining Tsinghua, making full use of his extensive academic influence, seizing the opportunity of the fourth industrial revolution led by artificial intelligence, and continuously pushing the construction of disciplines such as statistics and data science at Tsinghua to new heights.
Liu Jun stated that he was born and raised on the Tsinghua campus, and now, after more than sixty years, his decision to return stems from his love for education and research and a sense of calling for his country.
He pointed out that statistics and data science, as key foundations for the development of artificial intelligence, have broad prospects. In the future, he will do his utmost to promote the rapid development of disciplines such as statistics and data science at Tsinghua, support the construction of the Department of Statistics and Data Science, and help it become a well-known academic hub integrating industry, academia, and research at home and abroad.
Public information shows that Liu Jun is an alumnus of Tsinghua University High School. After obtaining his bachelor's degree in mathematics from Peking University in 1985, he went to the United States for further study. Since 2000, he has served as a tenured professor in the Department of Statistics at Harvard University. Liu Jun was elected as a member of the US National Academy of Sciences in 2025.
Since 2005, Liu Jun has served as a visiting professor at Tsinghua University. In 2015, he took the lead in establishing the Tsinghua University Center for Statistical Science, and in 2024, he helped Tsinghua University establish the Department of Statistics and Data Science.
