Hope Place Assists Ailing Family

(Kuching, 6th) Hope Place Kuching recently extended a helping hand to a family in Kampung Kudei, assisting them as they struggle to cope with ongoing health and life challenges due to the husband’s hereditary blood disease.
In a statement released yesterday (Jan 5), the NGO said it visited the family after receiving a call for help from the wife, Marinda Ayup (42). Marinda has long shouldered heavy family responsibilities alone and is mentally and physically exhausted.

Her husband, Malek (44), suffers from thalassemia and needs monthly blood transfusions at the hospital.
The statement said: "Due to limited education and physical restrictions, he is unable to do strenuous work and can only take on occasional odd jobs in the village."
"With a monthly income of about RM800, he can hardly cover the basic living expenses for their family of nine."
The couple has five schoolgoing children, aged between 6 and 18. In addition, Malek’s 85-year-old mother, who suffers from dementia, also lives with them and requires daily care.
Meanwhile, Malek’s 58-year-old older brother Alias, who lives with them, also suffers from severe thalassemia.

The statement noted: "Compared with Malek, Alias’s condition is even more serious. Due to extreme weakness and lack of strength, he is almost unable to move and has a pale, yellowish complexion."
Since both Malek and Alias are unable to work, Marinda has been forced to take on the main caregiving role for the whole family.
She has also tried to supplement the family income by going door-to-door selling homemade donuts.
Hope Place said Marinda previously tried to set up a stall by the roadside near her home, but had to stop as she did not have a business permit.
"Under the weight of these burdens, Marinda welcomes assistance in any form."
"At present, our association is providing basic food aid to help them with their urgent needs," the statement said.
