Israeli Defense Forces spokesperson Dafrin stated on the 16th that the ground offensive launched against Gaza City marks the "beginning of a new phase" of the IDF operation, and the ground offensive is expected to last for several months.

At a press conference, he said that Gaza City is the central hub of Hamas's military and political power, as well as its main stronghold. The IDF is carrying out "precise strikes" on Hamas military targets that threaten Israel's security and will continue to urge civilians to stay away from the battlefield in Gaza City.

He pointed out that in recent weeks, the IDF has expanded its humanitarian aid efforts in Gaza and has set up a humanitarian aid zone in the south.

He emphasized that currently there are still dozens of personnel held by Hamas. An important task of the IDF is to rescue these hostages and end Hamas's control of Gaza.

IDF Chief of Staff Zamir issued a statement on the evening of the 16th, saying that in the past 24 hours, the IDF has significantly expanded the scope of its operations in Gaza City and has defeated Hamas's core military forces. At present, the IDF is consolidating its gains and is "one step closer" to the end of the war.

The IDF released a statement on the morning of the 16th indicating that Zamir has entered the war zone. Two IDF divisions are fighting in Gaza City, and operations have now expanded into the city center.

Israeli media, citing security officials, reported that as of the morning of the 16th, between 300,000 and 350,000 people had fled Gaza City for southern Gaza, but more than 500,000 still remain inside Gaza City.
