When summarizing his visit to the United States, Taiwan Legislative Yuan President Han Kuo-yu stated that all four major planned objectives of the trip were achieved, deeply feeling the US's strong support for Taiwan’s democratic system.
At the invitation of the United States, Han Kuo-yu led a delegation of seven cross-party legislators to visit the US on June 21. The delegation members included KMT legislators Lin Sih-ming, Lai Shyh-bao, and Yang Chiung-ying; DPP legislators Chen Kuan-ting, Lee Po-yi, and Kuo Yu-ching; as well as Taiwan People’s Party legislator Hung Yu-hsiang.
According to comprehensive reports from Taiwan’s United Daily News and Liberty Times, the delegation concluded its trip on Saturday (June 27), taking the inaugural EVA Air nonstop flight from Washington to Taoyuan, and returned to Taiwan at about 9:30 p.m. that evening. Legislative Yuan Vice President Chiang Chi-chen and Secretary-General Chou Wan-lai went to the boarding gate to greet them, while more than ten KMT legislators welcomed them at the arrivals hall.
Making remarks in the airport hall, Han Kuo-yu pointed out that the most important mission of this trip was to advance parliamentary diplomacy. The delegation engaged in sincere and enthusiastic exchanges with US lawmakers, and met jointly with seven Senate Foreign Relations Committee senators and 33 members of the House of Representatives.
He recalled that US lawmakers actively participated in discussions, giving the delegation a deep sense of the strong support and friendly attitude of the US Congress toward Taiwan.
Han Kuo-yu also said that the visit coincided with the US 250th anniversary, and that the Taiwanese delegation had conveyed the highest blessings on behalf of all the people of Taiwan through various occasions.
Speaking about visits to TSMC’s Arizona plant and supply chain companies, Han Kuo-yu noted that business representatives reflected concerns such as how to avoid double taxation, and that the delegation had conveyed these opinions to the US Congress and relevant administrative departments. US lawmakers promised to speed up the process and do their best to help with tax legislation. The relevant bill has already passed the House of Representatives and is awaiting review by the Senate.
Additionally, entrepreneurs reported that Taiwanese companies investing in and building factories in the US should not have to shoulder responsibilities such as road construction and utility connections on their own. The Taiwan delegation expressed the request for a “build the nest to attract the phoenix” approach to the US, emphasizing that incoming Taiwanese businesses should not bear excessive infrastructure pressures. US officials, after receiving this information, promised to further strengthen improvements.
According to previous Taiwanese media reports, during his visit to Washington, Han Kuo-yu met with both former and current Speakers of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi and Mike Johnson.
