Exploring Semiconductor Investment Opportunities: Sarawak Launches 'Integrated Silicon Longhouse'

(Kuching, 25th) The concept of the “Integrated Silicon Longhouse”—a comprehensive ecosystem that brings together government, industry, academia, and global partners on a single platform—is opening up new opportunities for global investment in the semiconductor and high-tech industries.

Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari stated that this initiative is not just a symbolic idea, but a concrete blueprint set by Sarawak aimed at enabling the state to be competitive on the global stage.

“In Sarawak, longhouses are not only dwellings, but also a symbol of collaboration and community cohesion. Similarly, the Integrated Silicon Longhouse will consolidate forces from all sides to drive innovation and investment in the semiconductor industry.”

He made these remarks yesterday during a speech in London titled “Building the Integrated Silicon Longhouse: Sarawak’s Blueprint for Accelerating Global Investment and Industrial Influence.”

Abang Johari pointed out that this move aligns with the development direction of Sarawak’s high-tech industrial zone, namely the Sama Jaya Free Industrial Zone. Currently, multinational companies such as X-FAB and Melexis have already set up operations there.

He said the latest projects include X-FAB’s RM3 billion plant expansion investment as well as the construction of Southeast Asia’s largest wafer testing facility by Melexis in Kuching.

Meanwhile, he also emphasized that Sarawak is able to provide strong support for the semiconductor industry through clean and stable renewable energy as well as the post-pandemic development strategy (PCDS 2030), which focuses on social and economic balance.

He hopes that through this initiative, more high-tech investment can be attracted, local talent can be cultivated, and Sarawak’s influence in the Southeast Asian semiconductor value chain can be expanded.
