The death toll from the train rear-end collision in Bekasi, Indonesia has risen to 16.
Jakarta police spokesperson Budi said on the 29th that a 25-year-old female injured in the incident succumbed to her injuries, bringing the death toll in this accident to 16.
This accident occurred on the night of the 27th near Bekasi East Railway Station, located 25 kilometers east of Jakarta. At that time, a taxi is believed to have stalled and stopped at a level crossing near the station, causing a commuter train bound for Jakarta to be unable to leave the platform and was struck from behind by an incoming long-distance train, resulting in tragedy.
According to a report by Antara News Agency on Wednesday, the accident resulted in 107 casualties, including 16 dead and 91 injured. Forty-three of the injured have been discharged from the hospital, while the rest are still receiving treatment.
West Java Governor Dedy said that the provincial government will fully cover all medical expenses for the injured and allocate 20 billion Indonesian rupiah (4.5658 million ringgit) to improve hospital facilities for treating the injured.
The carriages struck in this accident were women-only carriages, so all of the victims were women, raising concerns over the safety of female passengers. These commuter trains are Jakarta's busiest public transport, with a daily passenger flow of more than 1.1 million trips.
