On the evening of the 27th, a long-distance train collided with a stationary commuter train near the Indonesian capital. The relevant authorities have concluded nearly 12 hours of rescue operations. This incident resulted in 15 deaths and 88 injuries. On the 28th, President Prabowo visited the injured and ordered an investigation.
According to AFP, the accident occurred near East Bekasi Station east of Jakarta, the capital. During the rescue operation, rescuers had to work hard to pry open deformed carriages.
Indonesia's National Search and Rescue Agency chief Muhammad said at a press conference: "This morning... everything has been completed. I confirm there are no other victims at the scene."
Cabinet official Agus told reporters that as of the afternoon of the 28th, the death toll had risen to 15, and another 88 were injured.
According to a spokesperson for Indonesia's railway company (PT KAI), it appears that a taxi first collided with the commuter train at a level crossing, causing the commuter train to stop on the tracks, after which it was hit by the long-distance train.
This large-scale rescue operation mobilized support from the military, fire department, national search and rescue agency, and the Red Cross.
On the 28th, President Prabowo visited the hospital in Bekasi to see the injured and also extended condolences to the families of the victims.
He also said that he has ordered an immediate investigation and instructed the construction of an elevated bridge in Bekasi.
