(Sibu, 4th) The project for a new bridge connecting Sibu city center to the west bank of Sibu has entered the final stage of site selection. Sarawak Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation, and Talent Development, Dr. Anwar Rapaee, stated that the selection of the drop-off point (location where the bridge connects to the ground) is crucial and must hold strategic significance.
He pointed out that several locations have been proposed by the Public Works Department and are currently in the final evaluation stage to determine the most suitable site for the bridge.
“We have received some site suggestions. The primary consideration is the location of the drop-off point, as it directly relates to the feasibility and practicality of the bridge. Some locations are less suitable because they require longer connecting paths. This is precisely the part we need to study in depth at the moment. Nevertheless, the bridge will definitely be built.”
He was speaking to the media today after receiving festive greetings from Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari. Accompanying him were Sarawak Minister of Utilities and Telecommunications Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi, and Bukit Assek State Assemblyman Chieng Jin Ek.
Additionally, Dr. Anwar Rapaee also revealed that during the meeting, one of the topics discussed with the Sarawak Premier was the annual provision of a daily living allowance totaling RM15,000 to reduce the living burden on students.
“We are exploring how to assist students who must rent externally to solve accommodation issues. This is one of the most urgent needs of students, especially those living off-campus, so they can have a more comfortable study and living environment.”
He also pointed out that the proposal for Sarawak University of Technology (UTS) to construct student hostels has already been drafted.
“The Sarawak Premier has instructed me to submit this proposal as soon as possible to speed up the implementation process, in order to provide complete accommodation facilities for students as early as possible.”
