KUCHING: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) is set to spotlight achievements and chart future strategies at its landmark convention this Sunday.

Political analyst Dr Hapizan Mohamad Naim expects the convention’s central theme will revolve around the state’s Post COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030), underscoring both progress and long-term direction.

He noted that GPS leaders are expected to highlight tangible achievements delivered under the PCDS 2030 framework, positioning the coalition as capable of steering Sarawak’s economic recovery and growth.

“This emphasis on real outcomes will serve as a strong morale booster for GPS component parties,” she said, adding that such messaging is crucial in maintaining unity and confidence within the coalition.

Hafizan, who is a senior lecturer at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), said this when asked on what to expect at the GPS Convention on April 19.

Despite its significance, Hapizan stressed that party conventions are not unusual in political practice. Instead, they function as routine platforms for leadership to consolidate support, communicate priorities, and align party direction.

“What is more important is the substance of the discussions. The issues raised during the convention could offer early signals of GPS’ political direction, particularly themes that may shape its next election manifesto,” she explained.

The upcoming gathering, however, carries added weight as it marks the first major convention since the formation of GPS in 2019 following its departure from the Barisan Nasional coalition.

Since its establishment, GPS has positioned itself on a “Sarawak First” platform, focusing on state rights, infrastructure development, and economic transformation.

Hapizan said the convention provides an opportunity for GPS to reaffirm its policy direction while strengthening its narrative ahead of future electoral contests.

“With PCDS 2030 as the backbone, the convention will likely project continuity, stability, and a clear development agenda for Sarawak,” he added.

The convention is expected to draw party leaders, grassroots members, and observers, making it a key event in the state’s political calendar.
