Miri Gas Cylinder Supply Crisis Needs Long-term Solutions

Published at Feb 14, 2025 01:44 pm
(Miri, 14th) The Chairman of the Sarawak Indigenous Entrepreneurs Chamber (DUBS) Miri branch, MOHAMMAD HAFIDZ ROHANI, expressed concern over the shortage of gas cylinders in the city, a problem that has recently become increasingly severe. This situation not only affects merchants, especially those in the food and beverage industry, but also affects households that rely on gas cylinders for daily use.

Complaints from merchants and consumers show that they have had to endure long queues, with over 100 people waiting in line for the limited supply just yesterday. Unfortunately, due to insufficient stock, many returned empty-handed. This not only leads to business operation disruptions but also burdens people who are already facing rising living costs.

The chamber believes that this crisis requires immediate action from both authorities and gas suppliers, as well as the adoption of more sustainable solutions. They urge the relevant parties to focus on:

1. Increasing Immediate Supply: Suppliers need to ensure an increase in supply to Miri in the near future to alleviate the pressure on traders and consumers.

2. Expediting Distribution: More efficient distribution measures are needed to avoid supply-demand imbalances.

3. Establishing Inventory Control Mechanisms: To prevent recurrence of shortages, a more effective inventory control system must be established, including monitoring the supply chain and ensuring a fairer distribution between traders and consumers.

In addition to these short-term measures, the chamber also proposes to PETROS to accelerate and expand the installation of Miri’s natural gas systems, especially for households, schools, and commercial premises. This move could reduce dependence on gas cylinders while providing a more stable and cost-effective long-term solution for the people.

We hope the relevant parties will take this issue seriously and take proactive measures to ensure stable energy supply for Miri's merchants and community. We will continue to monitor the situation and are prepared to collaborate with all parties to find the best solutions for the well-being of the people and the continued development of businesses in Miri.
