Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin Urges Upgrade of Miri Drainage System to Prevent Flash Floods from Recurring

(Miri, 27th) Sarawak Minister of Transport and Senadin State Assemblyman Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin has called on the relevant authorities to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the recent flash flood problem in Miri City and upgrade the outdated drainage system to prevent similar incidents from happening again.

Speaking during a visit to Miri National Secondary School this morning, he pointed out that Miri's current drainage system is outdated and unable to cope with the frequent occurrence of heavy rain, especially under the influence of recent extreme weather conditions, where heavy rainfall is more likely to cause urban flooding.

Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin emphasized the urgency of solving the drainage issue and requested Miri City Council, Miri Public Works Department, and Malaysia's Department of Irrigation and Drainage to jointly investigate and comprehensively review the hidden dangers and shortcomings of the city's drainage system.

He indicated that the existing system can no longer meet the growing demands of the city. With extreme weather becoming more common, certain areas repeatedly experience flash floods, severely affecting the lives of residents. He suggested that Malaysia's Department of Irrigation and Drainage develop a long-term plan to upgrade and improve Miri's outdated drainage system.

Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin stated that he received complaints from several residents on the night of the floods, urging the authorities to identify the cause of the flooding and take effective remedial actions.

He hopes that the three relevant agencies can quickly take action, conduct in-depth investigations in areas frequently affected by flooding, and based on the on-site investigation results, formulate system upgrade and transformation plans to fundamentally enhance drainage capacity and prevent further flooding caused by heavy rain.
