(Miri, 16th) Within the independent Chinese secondary school (independent high school) education system, every student’s developmental path is unique. Whether in dual-track or single-track classes, both pathways can nurture resilient individuals of outstanding achievement. Alumni of Pei Min Middle School in Miri, Lin Chengfu, is a vivid example of this philosophy.
From a young age, he was deeply interested in Chinese culture and decisively chose to attend Pei Min Middle School after completing primary education. Reflecting on his transition from a dual-track to a single-track class, he did not see it as a step backward; rather, he viewed it as a timely adjustment to suit his own learning pace. “Class placement in school is based on students’ strengths and interests, not a judgment of intelligence. Whether you pursue science or arts, as long as you love what you study, you can shine on your future path.”
He pointed out that under traditional views, single-track students are often misunderstood as being weaker academically, but in reality, this is not the case. Many single-track students have gone on to obtain master’s and doctoral degrees after graduation, fully proving that they possess equal potential for excellence.
He said that the key to achievement does not lie in whether one is in a single-track or dual-track class, but rather in personal effort and attitude toward learning. When choosing a subject or major, interest and potential should be the priority, not external labels.
After completing six years of secondary school, Lin Chengfu went to Taiwan to pursue a major in digital media and product design. Initially, he faced challenges due to a weaker foundation in his major, but with perseverance and hard work, he managed to catch up with his peers and improve his academic performance.
He shared that although the challenges were tough, they further honed his learning ability and willpower.
He emphasized that independent secondary school students’ linguistic proficiency is not as weak as outsiders criticize. The key is the attitude towards learning. He is grateful that his alma mater, Pei Min Middle School, had experienced language teachers who provided students with a solid foundation in languages. Having once served as an Information & Communication Technology (ICT) teacher at his alma mater, he deeply understands the significance of education.
He revealed that his alma mater not only imparted knowledge but also cultivated his abilities in teamwork, event planning, and management.
Lin Chengfu encourages his juniors to cherish their time studying at Pei Min. Whether in single-track or dual-track classes, as long as you have clear goals and persevere with effort, your dreams can be realized.
