(Perak, 3rd) Eight male and female hikers became stranded at Taiping’s Larut Hill resort area on Sunday evening after some team members were injured. Firefighters braved the darkness to ascend the mountain and rescue them, and brought them safely down at around 10pm.
The group, consisting of 2 men and 6 women, encountered trouble while descending. Two female team members experienced muscle cramps while another female member sustained a sprain and was unable to descend on her own.
Perak Fire and Rescue Department director Sayani disclosed in a statement that the operations command center received a report at 6:53pm on Sunday about hikers being stranded on Larut Hill, after which a team of 10 from Taiping Fire Station was dispatched for the rescue.
She stated that after the rescue team arrived at the foot of the mountain—located 4km from the station—within 5 minutes, one male team member had already descended to seek help, while seven team members (1 male, 6 females) remained on the hill. It was learned that 3 female team members were injured—2 with muscle cramps and another with a sprain.
She said that firefighters, with the support of police officers and staff from the Larut Hill management, ascended together to conduct the rescue. On the way to the victims’ location, they encountered all of the stranded hikers being guided down the mountain by a civilian.
She noted that the rescue team provided preliminary treatment to the female hiker with the sprain on the mountain and, at 9:50pm, successfully brought all seven team members safely down to the foot of the mountain, where they were handed over to the police for further action.
