Taiwanese Vice President Bi-khim Hsiao stated that Taiwan’s export value in August surpassed Korea’s for the first time, marking the result of Taiwan’s industry’s longstanding efforts. She also mentioned that the government hopes to create a balanced industrial environment, allowing Taiwan to further connect with the world.

According to a press release from the Presidential Office, on the 16th, Hsiao received the winners of the “21st Taiwan Golden Root Award” and said that all recipients of the Golden Root Award are successful entrepreneurs who are rooted in Taiwan and expanding globally, excelling in various fields and standing out amidst fierce competition, which is no easy feat.

She stated that the current global trade environment is undergoing many changes, with shifts in trade systems, as well as new challenges arising from tariffs and excess capacity. Meanwhile, the rise of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and the transformation in the structure of the new generation workforce have also impacted industries, making Taiwan’s industrial environment increasingly uncertain.

Hsiao mentioned that in the past two weeks, Taiwan’s stock market has repeatedly reached new highs, and in August, the export value surpassed Korea’s for the first time, which was the result of Taiwan industry’s long-term efforts and a major contribution to international trade. Facing a variety of challenges, some sectors in Taiwan still require further government assistance, so agencies such as the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the National Development Council have proposed various resilience budgets to support industry guidance and assistance, hoping for everyone’s support in the future promotion process.

She pointed out that the government hopes to create a balanced industrial environment in Taiwan, enabling northern, central, southern, and eastern regions, as well as all industries, to develop in a balanced way. In addition to semiconductors and technology industries, fields such as biotechnology, financial services, and healthcare can also leverage advanced technologies like AI, bringing new opportunities and further connecting Taiwan with the world.

Hsiao also thanked the Golden Root Award winners for their longstanding efforts and contributions to economic, industrial, and technological development in Taiwan, and looked forward to working with the government to balance and strengthen Taiwan. She believes a strong Taiwan can contribute to the world’s prosperity and development.

Korea’s Chosun Ilbo reported on the 15th, citing government data from Korea and Taiwan, that the per capita GDP of Korea and Taiwan is expected to be US$37,430 (157,300 ringgit) and US$38,066 (160,000 ringgit), respectively, this year. This marks the first time since 2003 that Korea has fallen behind Taiwan.
