(Miri News, 19th) Eight students from the Curtin University School of Business recently visited Kampung Pasir to launch a public welfare campaign titled 'Say No to Food Waste in Malaysia, Donate Surplus to the Needy,' aimed at addressing food waste issues and supporting local families.

The initiative not only provided much-needed food supplies to local families but also raised awareness about sustainable consumption. This is one of the important measures taken by Curtin University Malaysia Campus to fulfill its social responsibility.

Led by lecturer Dr. Samuel Adenyinka-Ojo, this initiative is part of the students' 'Digital Public Relations and Storytelling' course, combining classroom learning with real-world impact. It also aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly 'Zero Hunger' (SDG 2) and 'Responsible Consumption and Production' (SDG 12).

'Through this project, we hope students can create tangible impacts while addressing key global issues. Food insecurity and reducing waste are closely related challenges, and this experience allows them to witness this reality firsthand.'

He added that this activity is one of the third assessment group projects required by the 'Digital Public Relations and Storytelling' course, in partnership with the Food Aid Foundation Malaysia.

During the event, students donated a variety of essential food supplies to the village head of Kampung Pasir, Edward Anak Mampo Kapir.

In addition to distributing food on-site, this initiative also made a broad impact online. Students used social platforms to spread awareness about food waste and sustainability, not only reaching the Curtin University Malaysia Campus community but also a wider public audience.

'Digital Public Relations and Storytelling' student Cassandra Sonia Thiyaga Rajan shared her feelings.

'This activity was not just an assignment, but an opportunity to learn about social responsibility and the power of storytelling. Meeting the residents of Kampung Pasir and seeing our efforts recognized was truly encouraging.'

This meaningful activity reflects Curtin University Malaysia Campus's commitment to cultivating socially responsible students who can drive positive societal change.
