(Miri, 10th) Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin stated that Christmas is not just a season of celebration, but also an important time for sharing love, hope, and unity; the cohesion of the community and the continuation of culture are the best manifestations of the festive spirit.
Lee Kim Shin made these remarks last night while attending and delivering a speech at the Pre-Christmas Dinner Celebration 2025 organized by the Persatuan Wanita Orang Ulu Miri (PWOUM) at Toong Lin Court.
He said that the Persatuan Wanita Orang Ulu Miri has long made outstanding contributions in promoting women's empowerment, protecting traditional culture, and passing down ethnic handicrafts, which is praiseworthy.
“The traditional handicrafts made by Orang Ulu women are not only exquisitely crafted but also embody cultural stories and the soul of the people. Whether it is beading, weaving, or embroidery, every piece reflects patience, creativity, and the wisdom handed down through the generations.”

He pointed out that these crafts are not only loved in Sarawak but also highly appreciated by people both at home and abroad. “When I travel abroad, I often wear or gift beadwork jewelry made by Orang Ulu women, and almost every time it draws admiration. This makes me feel very proud, because our culture has gone global and touched the hearts of others.”
Lee Kim Shin encouraged the association to continue cultivating the younger generation, so that they can learn the cultural values and spiritual significance behind traditional crafts.
“Every bead, every thread, every pattern, represents not only art but also identity, heritage, and story. As long as we continue to pass it on, culture will not disappear but will continue to shine in modern forms.”
He emphasized that, in today's fast-changing society, traditional culture needs to be cherished and passed on even more. Organizations like the Persatuan Wanita Orang Ulu Miri play a vital role in ensuring culture continues in modern times—progressing with the times while retaining its genuine essence.
“Women are not only the core of the family, but also the protectors of community wisdom and driving force of social progress.”
He also called on the public that, during the Christmas season, in addition to celebrating and giving thanks, everyone should reflect on the meaning of love, lend a helping hand to those in need, and work together to build a society filled with care and inclusiveness.
