(Bandar Seri Begawan, 10th) The ceremony to lower the grand national flag in celebration of the Sultan’s 80th birthday was held last Saturday at the Grand Flagpole Square outside the Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Complex in the capital, marking the successful conclusion of the month-long series of festivities for the Sultan’s 80th birthday.
The event was officiated by the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Pehin Dato Hj Hazair. Attendees included permanent secretaries and deputy permanent secretaries from various government departments, senior officials, military and police officers, and representatives from the private sector.
During the ceremony, a contingent of Brunei Royal Navy flag bearers marched into the venue accompanied by the Brunei Royal Police band, followed by a choir performing the national anthem.
Afterwards, the Navy flag bearers slowly lowered the grand national flag, which measured 3.7 meters high and 7.5 meters long, and handed the lowered flag to the guest of honor, Pehin Dato Hj Hazair.
As the grand flag was slowly lowered, the celebrations for the Sultan’s 80th birthday were officially brought to a successful close. The Sultan’s Birthday Celebration Committee also called on citizens and business owners to gradually remove the flags and celebratory banners displayed at residences, buildings, and commercial premises in line with conclusion of the festivities.
