(Beijing, 11th) Ahead of high-level trade talks between China and the United States, Chinese state media has released a series of statements emphasizing that dialogue serves as a vital opportunity to resolve trade disputes. However, it firmly stressed that negotiations do not equate to concessions or sacrificing China’s core interests. State media pointed out that it is unrealistic to expect a single or even a few rounds of talks to resolve all issues.
A commentary titled "Equal Dialogue is the Right Way to Address Major Power Issues" highlighted that the China-U.S. talks are drawing significant international attention amid sluggish global economic recovery. China agreed to engage with the U.S. out of a sense of responsibility to safeguard the multilateral trade system and its own interests, demonstrating its role as a major global player. However, it warned that dialogue must be based on equality and mutual respect, not used as a unilateral pressure tool.
China’s Strong Stance on Protecting Its Interests
The article underscored China’s clear understanding of the complexities of negotiations and cautioned the U.S. that resolving issues through talks requires genuine sincerity and the rectification of misguided policies. Attempts to use negotiations as a pretext for coercion or extortion are doomed to fail. China expressed confidence in its patience and determination, stating that regardless of how events unfold, its commitment to safeguarding its developmental interests remains unwavering.
Meanwhile, a Chinese state media-affiliated outlet, Yuyuantantian, asserted that China’s willingness to engage in talks stems from its firm stance on maintaining international fairness and justice, not from any intention to make concessions. Reports suggest that China’s decision to agree to the talks partly stems from concerns over the impact of U.S. tariffs on its economy.
Another article titled "China’s Firm Stance on Maintaining International Economic Order" elaborated on China’s resilient economic fundamentals and long-term development trajectory, highlighting its robust economic structure and resilience against external shocks. It reiterated that any attempts by the U.S. to use negotiations as a guise for imposing further pressure will be firmly opposed. Principles and fairness will not be sacrificed for any deal.
