(Miri, 12th) The Sarawak Indigenous Intellectuals Association and the Sarawak Regional Skills Bureau held the 2025 Miri Youth Empowerment Expo today at the Miri Indoor Stadium.
Miri Member of Parliament, Chiew Choon Man , in his speech today, stated that young people today face a series of unprecedented obstacles, some of which are new, while others have persisted for generations. For many, the transition from education to the workplace can be fraught with challenges. Issues like underemployment, unemployment, the middle-income trap, housing, and the ever-increasing cost of living are pressing realities that have profound implications for us. Combined with important life milestones such as finding a job, purchasing property, and establishing a family, our economic burden can often increase day by day.
He said that at the same time, we are also facing new challenges that require new skills and adaptability. The rapid development of technology, especially in areas such as artificial intelligence, big data, and cybersecurity, is reshaping industries at lightning speed. Those who can grasp these changes will benefit, while others may potentially be left behind. We must urgently bridge this gap through thoughtful policies and inclusive initiatives.
"Therefore, our government and policymakers must highly prioritize the economic development of young people. While sports, entertainment, and social activities are beneficial for young people, many indeed have a more pressing need to enhance financial literacy and economic stability. Without stable jobs, fair wages, or career development opportunities, we cannot truly enjoy life. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that young people can find meaningful work, create a sustainable future, and contribute to society."
He pointed out that at the policy level, the focus should be on providing young people with modern, industry-relevant skills, ensuring businesses offer convenient quality job opportunities, providing funding and guidance for entrepreneurship, and expanding housing and livelihood projects. These measures will collectively promote economic stability and help young people confidently plan for the future.
"It is against this backdrop that the 2025 Youth Empowerment Expo has emerged as a strategic platform aimed at empowering young people by providing practical knowledge on educational opportunities and training programs. Through today's event, we aim to help participants explore new career paths or business projects they may never have previously considered."
He also said, "I hope to break down information barriers, allowing every young person, regardless of their background, to have the opportunity to turn dreams into reality. This expo is part of our grander vision where our young people are not just participants but active drivers of Malaysia's growth and development."
It is reported that this one-day event includes a stock trading competition, e-sports competition, cooking course competition, and lucky draw.
