China to Suspend Canada Anti-Discrimination Tariffs from March

Published at Feb 28, 2026 11:21 am
After a warming of China-Canada relations, China’s Ministry of Commerce announced on the 27th that, in light of current changes in circumstances, it has decided to adjust anti-discrimination measures against Canada and will temporarily not impose a 100% tariff on canola meal and peas originating from Canada, nor the 25% tariff imposed on lobsters and crabs imported from Canada.

In 2024, the previous Trudeau government in Canada imposed a 100% tariff on Chinese electric vehicles and a 25% tariff on steel and aluminum products. China retaliated with countermeasures, imposing a 100% tariff on canola oil, canola meal, and peas from Canada starting in March 2025, and a 25% tariff on pork and seafood products, followed by a 76% tariff in August on Canadian canola seeds.

● Chinese Electric Vehicles Benefit from Preferential Tariffs

Canada’s new Prime Minister Carney made his first visit to China last month, and the two countries reached a preliminary trade agreement. Canada will allow 49,000 Chinese electric vehicles to enter the Canadian market with a preferential tariff of 6.1%; China is also expected, by March 1, to lower the import tariff on Canadian canola oil from the current 84% to about 15%, and starting from March will cancel tariffs on Canadian canola meal, lobsters, crabs, and peas.

A spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Commerce stated on the 27th that the Canadian government has recently officially announced partial adjustments to its additional tariffs on Chinese steel and aluminum products, “which fits the conditions for China to adjust its anti-discrimination measures.” This latest China-Canada mutual tariff adjustment will help deepen economic and trade cooperation between the two countries and promote the healthy, stable, and sustainable development of China-Canada trade relations.
