(Bandar Seri Begawan, 30th) Minister of Home Affairs Dato Awang Abdul Mutalib stated that the Water Village Fire Station consistently ensures its emergency preparedness level remains at its best, keeping abreast of best practices from neighboring countries.
Each fireboat is equipped with at least one portable water pump to ensure the ability to respond to building fires in the area.
The Minister stated that the two fire stations covering the Water Village area are equipped with a total of two fire trucks, five portable water pumps, 137 fire hoses, and 22 nozzles.
During the 11th day of the debate at the first meeting of the 22nd session of the 2026 National Assembly (MMN), held at the Parliament building yesterday, the Minister of Home Affairs responded to a question from a member regarding the preparedness of the Water Village fire station.
The preparedness measures outlined by the Minister include: vessel equipment, firefighting capacity, personnel training, response times, operational coverage, as well as the addition of assets, maintenance, personnel safety, and inter-agency coordination, all to address fire incidents in the Water Village.
The Minister emphasized that the efficient actions of fire personnel are crucial for emergency response. Response time is one of the key performance indicators, and according to the Joint Budget Plan (JBP), the response time in even the most remote areas of Water Village should not exceed 20 minutes.
“Training results show that the response time from the furthest Sungai Kebun Fire Station to Kampong Sungai Bangar is about 20 minutes. Meanwhile, from the Pelangkaran Fire Station in Bandar Seri Begawan to Kampong Burong Pingai Ayer, the response time is about 5 minutes, depending on the tide conditions along the Brunei River,”
The Minister has also adopted a community participation approach by training grassroots leaders and residents of the Water Village to become first responders.
“This initiative aims to equip them with basic fire emergency knowledge and firefighting skills so they can handle any fire incident while waiting for the fire department to arrive,”
The Minister also revealed that, as an additional measure to strengthen fire safety in the area, 30 fire hydrants have been replaced at several locations in Water Village, including Kampung Pandai Besi, Kampung Tamoi Hujung, Kampung Setia 'A', and Kampung Setia 'B', to ensure sufficient water supply during firefighting operations.
The Minister stated that the government will continue to periodically assess needs for increasing assets, improving operational capabilities, maintaining infrastructure, enhancing fire safety, and reinforcing community awareness and training programs to ensure the safety and security level of the Water Village.
