(Dodong, 13th) The Wen Chung Alumni Association visited Dodong Chinese School and had an in-depth exchange with the school's Vice Principal, Fang Jingjing, and administrative staff. The exchange also included a broad discussion on the changing motivations for Chinese language learning.
Founded in 1937, Dodong Chinese School is the third oldest Chinese school in Brunei and has a history of nearly ninety years.
Vice Principal Fang Jingjing mentioned during the exchange that with the decreasing proportion of Chinese students each year, the school has made corresponding adjustments in Chinese language teaching.
Currently, the proportion of Chinese students has dropped to less than 30%. To adapt to this change, the school focuses more on stimulating students' interest in learning Chinese through practical application and conversational exchange, and has innovated teaching methods to enhance students' language practice abilities.
Vice Principal Fang further analyzed the main reasons for the decline in the number of Chinese students, pointing out that this phenomenon is closely related to the movement of the Chinese population in the Dodong area.
Many Chinese families choose to move to Bandar Seri Begawan or other overseas regions for development after their children reach adulthood, resulting in the Chinese population in Dodong becoming a group residing elsewhere. This population movement presents new challenges and has prompted the school to make corresponding adjustments in its educational model and Chinese language teaching.
This exchange not only enhanced the understanding and cooperation between the Wen Chung Alumni Association and Dodong Chinese School but also laid a good foundation for further interaction in the educational field in the future.
The Wen Chung Alumni Association hopes to work with Dodong Chinese School to explore more effective educational methods, especially in terms of enhancing students' language abilities and opportunities for cultural heritage cooperation.
