(US, 24th) — Gunshots were heard near the White House on the evening of the 23rd in the United States. A man fired a gun near the White House and was subsequently shot down by Secret Service personnel.
The White House immediately went into emergency lockdown, with large numbers of police and Secret Service personnel rushing to the scene to respond.
FBI Director Patel confirmed the incident via social media later that evening, but did not disclose further details.
According to US media reports, a man armed with a handgun fired shots near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington. Secret Service personnel then returned fire, taking him down. During the exchange of gunfire, at least one bystander was shot.
The incident occurred just one block from the White House. At the time, President Trump was at the White House.
According to multiple US media outlets, the event took place at around 6 p.m. that evening. Dozens of shots rang out outside the White House, and journalists on the North Lawn were quickly escorted into the White House press room. Reporters inside the White House were told to shelter in place, while Secret Service agents shouted 'Get down' and warned that someone was shooting.
The Associated Press reported that both the gunman and the wounded bystander are currently in critical condition.
